How to play Shogi

• Each side has twenty pieces: a king, a rook, a bishop, two gold and two silver generals, two knights, two lances and nine pawns.
• Sente moves first.
• Captured pieces go to your hand, and on a later turn you may drop one onto an empty square instead of moving.
• Most pieces may promote when they move into, within or out of the last three ranks.
• Checkmate the enemy king to win.
